Live Mouth Smart – what does that mean?
The 2017 World Oral Health Day campaign theme ‘Live Mouth Smart’ empowers people to take control of their oral health all throughout their lives so they can enjoy a healthy, functional mouth from childhood into old age.
The message of the campaign is that if one makes smart decisions such as adopting good oral hygiene habits, avoiding risk factors and having a regular dental check-up, they can help prevent oral disease. The world needs to realize that the positive impacts of good oral health go way beyond just a nice smile.
Basic oral functions that are the core component of everyday life – such as the ability to speak, smile, sigh and kiss, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a world of emotions through facial expressions – are affected by poor oral hygiene.
This in turn adversely affects a person’s physiological, social and psychological well-being.
The campaign strives to make people understand the broader consequences of oral disease, and how poor oral health affects general health and well-being.
The impact of poor oral health, and oral disease, can drastically alter several aspects of a person’s social life, which can cause low self-esteem, diminished social interactions, poor school performance, lack of confidence, and meager employment prospects.
Your oral health should never be taken for granted, as it in turn has so many factors dependent on it – factors that are key to the everyday functions you perform in your life. Like a domino effect, one negative impact follows another, leaving you with not only poor oral health, but also systemic illnesses, inability to comfortably perform simple tasks, and inevitably a poor social life.
The general public, oral health practitioners and policymakers must work together to address the disease burden and take the necessary action so that populations can Live Mouth Smart.
